"Boutique business coaching" covers five very different things, and buying the wrong one is the most common way boutique owners waste money on help. This page explains the difference between a self-paced course, an ongoing membership, a store audit, a strategy call, and private coaching — so you can pick the one that matches your actual situation.
I'm Carina Hatton. I've owned a boutique since 2013, I've been coaching boutique owners since 2019, I'm a Shopify Partner, and I've built or reviewed more than 3,000 stores. I've watched owners buy the most expensive option when a $49 training would have solved it, and I've watched owners buy their eleventh course when what they actually needed was someone to look at their store.
The five types of boutique support, compared
| Type of support | Best when | What you get | Typical investment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Self-paced course | You know exactly what you need to learn | Training on one topic, watched on your schedule | Usually under $500 |
| Ongoing coaching membership | Several things need work and you want continued help | Full training library, monthly group coaching call, members' group | $297/month or $2,997/year |
| Store audit | You have traffic but few sales and don't know why | A written review of your store with specific fixes | $300 |
| Strategy call | One decision is blocking you right now | Live time to talk it through and leave with a decision | $399 |
| Private coaching | You want sustained one-to-one attention on your business | Individual work with Carina over time | Quoted individually |
Self-paced courses: cheapest, but only if you know the problem
A course is the right buy when you can finish this sentence honestly: "I need to learn how to ___." Run Facebook ads. Buy inventory without overspending. Set up email flows. If the blank is specific, buy the course, watch it, and do the work.
Courses fail boutique owners in one situation: when you don't know what's wrong. Buying a traffic course when your real problem is a 0.4% conversion rate just brings more people to a store that doesn't convert. If you're not sure which is which, the conversion rate checker will tell you in about two minutes whether you have a traffic problem or a store problem.
Ongoing membership: for when more than one thing is off
A membership makes sense when the honest answer is "several things need work and I'd like to stop guessing which one to do next." You get the training library, but the point is the ongoing part — a monthly group coaching call where you can bring your numbers, and a members' group between calls.
It's a poor fit if you haven't opened yet and just need to make your first ten decisions. Start with the one-page boutique business plan and the startup cost calculator instead — both free, both faster.
Store audit: the cheapest way to find the actual problem
If people are landing on your store and not buying, an audit is usually the highest-value $300 you can spend, because it replaces a guess with a list. I go through the store the way a shopper would, then send you the specific things costing you sales — product pages, pricing presentation, navigation, checkout friction, photography, and mobile experience.
Most owners who buy an audit discover the problem wasn't the one they were about to spend money fixing. See what's included on the boutique store audit page.
Strategy call: buy time, not training
A strategy call is for decisions, not education. Should I open a storefront or stay online? Do I drop this category? Is my pricing wrong or is my traffic wrong? Should I buy this $6,000 order? These are questions where thirty focused minutes beats thirty hours of research.
Don't buy a call for something a training already covers in detail — that's paying premium rates for content you could watch. Both call lengths are listed on Work With Carina.
Private coaching: sustained one-to-one attention
Private coaching is the largest investment, and it's the right one when your boutique is established enough that the decisions are big and specific to you — hiring, expansion, wholesale, buying at scale. If you're still working on your first consistent $5k month, a membership will get you further per dollar.
How to choose in under a minute
- I don't know what's wrong. → Store audit.
- I know exactly what to learn. → A single course.
- One decision is stuck. → Strategy call.
- Several things need work and I want ongoing help. → Coaching membership.
- I want individual attention over time and have the budget. → Private coaching.
- I haven't opened yet. → Free planning tools first. Spend money on inventory and your store, not on help you can't apply yet.
The honest version
No format works for someone who won't do the work between sessions, and no format is right for everyone. The most expensive option isn't automatically the fastest — plenty of boutique owners have fixed their sales problem with a $300 audit and two weeks of implementation. Pick the smallest thing that will actually unblock you, do it, then decide whether you need the next level.
