To start a boho boutique, define your boho customer and the exact version of boho you sell, build a focused mix of dresses, tops, layers, jewelry and accessories, source from boho-friendly wholesale vendors, and launch online with photos and a brand voice that look like one store. Consistency is what separates a boho boutique people remember from one that looks like a marketplace.

I'm Carina Hatton. I have run an ecommerce boutique since 2013 and coached boutique owners since 2019. This is the boho pillar guide. Sourcing has its own deep guide, boho wholesale clothing, so read that when you are ready to buy. For the general steps every boutique needs, see how to start a boutique.

Step 1: Define your boho customer

Boho covers a wide range of shoppers. Pick one and write her down: age range, where she lives, what she does on weekends, what she spends on a dress. A festival-going shopper in her twenties and a relaxed, earthy shopper in her forties both like boho, but they want different fabrics, lengths and price points. When you know who she is, buying decisions get easier.

Step 2: Choose your version of boho

Your aesthetic is the filter for every order. A few common directions:

DirectionLookFits a shopper who
Classic bohoFlorals, peasant tops, tiered maxi skirts, embroideryWants romantic, feminine everyday pieces
Earthy or minimal bohoNeutral tones, linen, gauze, natural texturesPrefers calm, relaxed style
Western bohoFringe, suede, turquoise, bootsLoves country and southwestern style; see how to start a western boutique
Festival bohoBold prints, crochet, statement accessoriesShops for events and seasons

Pick one lead direction. You can blend a little, but a store that mixes all four usually looks unfocused.

Step 3: Build your boho product mix

  • Dresses and maxi skirts. Usually the heart of a boho assortment.
  • Tops and blouses. Peasant, embroidered and gauze tops that pair with denim.
  • Layers. Kimonos, cardigans and vests that extend your seasons.
  • Jewelry. Layered necklaces, stacking rings and earrings. See wholesale jewelry for boutiques.
  • Accessories. Hats, bags and belts that finish outfits. See wholesale accessories.
  • Lifestyle extras. Candles or home goods, only if they fit your look. See wholesale candles.

Step 4: Source boho inventory

My full sourcing breakdown, including how to tell real boho from generic boho, is in boho wholesale clothing. The short version:

  • FashionGo is a women's apparel wholesale marketplace worth searching for boho dresses, tops and layers.
  • Faire is useful for jewelry, accessories and lifestyle items from smaller makers in small amounts.
  • Independent boho designers can give you pieces other stores do not have, usually at higher cost.

Before any order, read how to spot fake wholesale vendors.

Step 5: Plan your first boho inventory

Buy wide and shallow: a curated set of styles in modest quantities, with money held back for reorders. Many boho pieces are loose or one-size, which lowers sizing risk, but check how each vendor cuts, because "one size" fits very differently from brand to brand. The method for sizing your buy is in how much inventory to start a boutique and how many styles to start with.

Step 6: Price boho pieces

Boho shoppers often pay for details like embroidery, natural fabrics and handmade touches, but only if your photos and descriptions show those details. Price every item from its landed cost.

Gross margin % = (retail price − landed cost) ÷ retail price × 100

Hypothetical example: a maxi dress lands at $24. At $64 retail, margin is ($64 − $24) ÷ $64 = about 63%. Your numbers depend on your vendors. See retail pricing and markup vs margin.

Step 7: Set up your online boho boutique

Most boho boutiques I work with start online. Shopify is the platform I use and recommend for most boutique owners. Choose a clean theme and let your photos carry the style. The full setup walk-through is in how to start an online boutique.

Step 8: Keep your look consistent

  • Shoot in the same light and setting so your product pages look like one collection.
  • Style outfits head to toe with your own jewelry and accessories.
  • Write descriptions in one voice that sounds like your customer.
  • Say no to pieces that do not fit your chosen direction, even if they are cute.

Step 9: Market your boho boutique

Boho is visual, so Pinterest and Instagram are natural fits. Pin outfit collages and styling ideas, post try-ons and behind-the-scenes, and build an email list from day one. See how to make money on Pinterest for a Pinterest plan.
