You have a name. What now?
A name doesn't make you money — the plan behind it does. Price your products, size your first inventory buy and know what your launch actually costs before you print a single label.
How to choose a boutique name you won't regret
A generator gives you options. These are the filters that decide which option survives.
Descriptive, evocative or brandable?
Descriptive names tell a shopper what you sell before they click. They're the safest choice for a new boutique with no audience, and they're easier to find in search. The catch is range: a name with “Denim” in it gets awkward the day you add jewelry.
Evocative names sell a feeling. They travel well across categories and tend to age better, but they ask more of your photography, tagline and product pages, because the name alone won't explain you.
Brandable (coined) names give you the most freedom and the cleanest handle availability, and the most work up front — nobody knows what you sell until you tell them. If you go this route, pair the name with a plain-English tagline everywhere it appears.
The say-it-out-loud test
Read the name to someone over the phone. If they can spell it back without help, it passes. If you find yourself saying “with two Ls” or “no E on the end”, you'll be saying it forever — in every ad, on every podcast, at every market booth.
Check before you commit
This tool cannot tell you whether a name is available, and neither can any other generator. Work through this list yourself for any name you're serious about:
- Search the name in Google in quotes, plus your niche, and see who already ranks.
- Search the USPTO trademark database (and your country's equivalent) for the exact word and close variants.
- Check your state or provincial business registry for an existing entity with that name.
- Check the domain at a registrar — and check the obvious misspellings too.
- Check the handle on every platform you'll use, even the ones you don't plan to post on yet.
- For anything you'll invest in heavily, pay an attorney for a clearance search. It's cheaper than a rebrand.
Five naming mistakes that cost boutique owners money
- Boxing yourself in. A name tied to one category, one season or one town limits what you can sell later.
- Creative spelling. “Kloset” and “Boutiq” feel distinctive and cost you every customer who types it the normal way.
- Copying a brand you admire. Names that echo an existing boutique invite legal trouble and make you look like the second choice.
- Skipping the trademark check. Rebranding after six months means new labels, new packaging, new signage and lost search equity.
- Choosing alone at midnight. Say your top three out loud to five people in your target customer group before you buy anything.
