To start a jewelry business as a retailer, pick one customer and one price lane, buy a small tested assortment from wholesale brands, price every piece off its landed cost, and launch online or at a pop-up before you sign a lease. Jewelry is small, light and giftable, which makes it one of the cheapest boutique categories to open. It is also one of the easiest to get wrong, because a table full of pretty pieces with no clear customer does not sell.
This guide is for owners who want to sell jewelry: an online jewelry boutique, a small shop, a booth or a jewelry wall inside a clothing store. If you want to make jewelry by hand, the business side below still applies, but production is its own skill and I don't cover it here.
Pick your jewelry business model first
Almost every decision later, from budget to packaging, depends on where you sell. Here is how the common retail models compare.
| Model | Best for | Main cost | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Online jewelry boutique | Owners with a following or content habit | Photography and marketing | Shoppers can't feel weight or see scale |
| Pop-ups and markets | Testing prices and styles cheaply | Booth fees, display, travel | Theft and small tables that look cluttered |
| Storefront or shop-in-shop | Owners in a walkable, gift-buying area | Rent and cases | Jewelry alone rarely covers full rent |
| Jewelry inside a clothing boutique | Existing boutique owners | Inventory only | Treating it as an afterthought by the register |
If you are brand new, I would start online plus a few pop-ups. It lets you learn which price points and styles your customer actually picks up before you commit to rent. The broader online boutique guide covers the store setup in more depth.
Choose a customer and a price lane
"Jewelry" is too wide to buy for. Decide three things before you look at a single line sheet:
- Who she is. A college student buying trend earrings shops differently from a 45-year-old buying a gift for her sister.
- The retail price range. For example, most pieces between $24 and $68. Staying inside a lane makes your shop feel intentional.
- The look. Dainty gold layering, boho stones, western turquoise-look, statement beaded, or classic pearls. Pick one lead look and at most one supporting look.
If boho or western is your direction, the boho jewelry wholesale guide and western jewelry wholesale guide go deeper on those looks.
What it costs to start a jewelry business
Costs depend almost entirely on the model. Below is a hypothetical example for a small online jewelry boutique with a few weekend pop-ups. Your numbers will be different, so treat this as a way to organize your budget, not a quote.
| Line | Hypothetical amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Opening inventory | $1,500 | About 100 to 130 units at wholesale |
| Packaging | $200 | Cards, pouches, boxes, mailers |
| Displays and props | $250 | Busts, earring cards, trays, a mirror |
| Website and apps | $150 | First months of your store plan and a theme |
| Business setup | $300 | Registration and permits vary by state |
| Photography | $100 | Backdrops and a light if you shoot yourself |
| Launch marketing and first pop-up | $400 | Booth fee plus a small promotion budget |
| Total | $2,900 | Keep a cash cushion on top of this |
Run your own version in the boutique startup cost calculator. For a storefront, add rent, deposits, locking cases and insurance, and read how much it costs to start a boutique.
Build your opening assortment
A strong first buy has a few best-seller categories bought with some depth, not one of everything. Earrings and layering necklaces usually do the heavy lifting because they are easy impulse and gift purchases. Rings bring size headaches, so start with adjustable or stacking styles.
| Category | Hypothetical share of first buy | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Earrings | 35% | Lowest price, most impulse |
| Necklaces | 30% | Layering sells two or three at once |
| Bracelets | 20% | Stacks and fits most wrists |
| Rings | 10% | Adjustable styles avoid size gaps |
| Reorder reserve | 5% or more | Money to chase what sells |
For how many units and styles to buy, the jewelry inventory guide walks through the math, and the first wholesale order allocator splits a budget across categories for you.
Where to buy jewelry wholesale
Most new jewelry retailers buy from a mix of wholesale marketplaces, brands they apply to directly and trade shows. When you evaluate a line, get these in writing:
- Metal and finish. Plated, gold-filled, stainless or sterling. This decides care, price and how you describe it.
- Opening and reorder minimums, and whether best sellers stay in stock.
- Suggested retail and whether the brand has pricing rules.
- Packaging included, like cards or pouches.
- Return or defect policy for broken clasps and tarnish.
Only describe metals the way the supplier documents them. The FTC has specific Jewelry Guides about terms like "gold filled" and "sterling," so if a listing is vague, ask before you write your product description.
Faire is a common starting point because many jewelry brands list there with low opening minimums. You can browse jewelry brands on Faire, and my Faire guide for boutiques explains accounts and terms. The full sourcing breakdown lives in wholesale jewelry for boutiques.
How to price jewelry so it actually makes money
Price from landed cost, not the wholesale line. Landed cost is the wholesale price plus your share of shipping and the packaging each piece goes out in.
Hypothetical example: a necklace costs $12 wholesale. Shipping on the order works out to $1 per piece and the pouch and card cost $0.60. Landed cost is $13.60. At a $34 retail price, your margin is ($34 minus $13.60) divided by $34, which is 60%. At $28 it drops to about 51%.
Jewelry can usually carry a healthier markup than basics because shoppers judge it by look, not by a comparison price. Still, check that every piece clears the margin you need after discounts. The landed cost calculator and profit margin calculator do the math in seconds.
Presentation and photos
Jewelry is bought with the eyes. In person, group by look and color, keep space between pieces, and put a mirror within arm's reach. Show necklaces layered on a bust, not lying flat in a pile. Online, shoppers need scale: one photo on a person or a hand, one close-up, and the length or size in the description. The jewelry product photography guide covers lighting and setups you can do at home.
Set up your online jewelry store
For an online jewelry boutique, I recommend Shopify because it handles product variants, inventory counts and in-person sales in one place. Before launch, set up:
- Collections by look and by gift price, such as "Gifts under $40."
- Clear care notes on each product page.
- Shipping rates that make sense for a small, light package.
- A return policy that says how you handle earrings, which many shops treat as final sale for hygiene reasons. Decide your own rule and state it plainly.
Name and brand
Your name should fit the look you picked and still work if you add a few accessories later. My jewelry boutique names list has ideas sorted by style, plus how to test your finalists.
Launch plan for your first 30 days
- Two weeks before: photograph everything, load products, and tell friends and your email list the date.
- Launch week: open with a small gift-with-purchase instead of a big discount so you protect your margin.
- First pop-up: watch what people pick up, try on and put back. That tells you more than any report.
- Day 30: check sell-through by category and reorder the winners before they run out.
