A good sip-and-shop is a two to three hour evening event with light refreshments, a clear theme, one simple offer and a guest list built from RSVPs. Its real job is to fill the store with people likely to buy, collect new email and SMS signups, and give customers a reason to bring a friend.

I'm Carina Hatton, boutique owner since 2013 and ecommerce coach since 2019. Sip-and-shops are the event I recommend most often to storefront owners because they are easy to repeat. The mistakes are also predictable: too much food, too deep a discount, and no plan for following up with the people who came. This guide covers the whole plan. For other event types, see the boutique event ideas hub.

When to hold it

Weeknight evenings, usually Thursday, from 5 or 6 pm for two to three hours, work for most storefront boutiques. People can come after work, and you do not give up a busy Saturday. Avoid dates that clash with big local events unless you are partnering with them.

Discounts vs gifts with purchase

A storewide 20% off feels generous, but it cuts into every sale, including sales from people who would have bought anyway. A gift with purchase or spend threshold usually protects more of your margin.

Food and drink

Keep it simple and easy to eat standing up. Sparkling water, lemonade, a mocktail, and small bites that will not stain clothing. Keep food and drinks at a station away from the racks, and have napkins everywhere. A local bakery or café partner may provide refreshments in exchange for promotion.

If you plan to serve alcohol: rules on serving or giving away alcohol in a retail store vary by city, county and state, and some areas require a permit even when drinks are free. Confirm the requirements with your local licensing authority and your insurance provider before you promote the event. Many boutiques skip alcohol and serve mocktails instead.

A 3-week sip-and-shop plan

WhenWhat to do
3 weeks beforePick theme, date, offer and partner. Create an RSVP form. Order any gifts.
2 weeks beforeEmail and text your list. Post the invite. Ask your partner to share it.
1 week beforeReminder email. Plan staffing and the floor layout. Check stock depth on featured items.
1 day beforeReminder text to RSVPs. Test card readers. Prep the signup station.
Day ofFinal text 2 hours before. Set up refreshments, music and bags.
2 days afterThank-you email with photos and a short follow-up offer.

Invitations, RSVPs and reminders

Ask for an RSVP even if the event is open to everyone. RSVPs give you a head count, a list to remind, and new signups. A simple form asking for name, email and phone is enough.

Example invite text: "You're invited to our Fall Preview Sip-and-Shop, Thursday Oct 9, 6 to 8 pm. First look at new arrivals, mocktails and a gift with every $75 purchase. Bring a friend. RSVP here."

Reminders do most of the work. If you use Instagram or Facebook, ManyChat can send the RSVP link automatically when someone comments a keyword on your event post. For the email side, Privy can run a simple signup form and reminder flow on Shopify.

Merchandising for the night

  • Put the featured or new arrivals at the front with full size runs.
  • Build three or four complete outfits on a rack or mannequins so people can buy the look.
  • Place an add-on table near checkout with items under $30.
  • Clear the fitting room area and add a mirror outside it. Friends like to give opinions.

Staffing and checkout flow

Plan roles, not just people. One person greets and runs the signup station, one works the floor and fitting rooms, and one runs checkout. For a busy event, a second checkout point keeps the line short. If you are on Shopify, Shopify POS lets a second person take payment on a phone or tablet and keeps event customers in the same records as your online store.

Pre-bag gifts with purchase so checkout stays quick, and have a hold rack for customers still deciding.

Follow up after the event

  • Send a thank-you email within 48 hours with photos and the pieces that sold best.
  • Give attendees who did not buy a short, time-limited reason to come back.
  • Tag new subscribers so you know they came from the event.
  • Text anyone who put items on hold.

Was it profitable?

Use this simple check. Example numbers are hypothetical.

LineExample
Event sales$2,400
Cost of goods sold (about 45%)$1,080
Refreshments, gifts, printing$220
Extra staff hours$90
Event profit$1,010
New signups32

Then check how many attendees buy again in the next 30 days. That repeat business is often worth more than the night itself. The profit margin calculator helps you check your product margin before you choose the offer.
