For most small boutiques on Shopify, the built-in Shopify Shipping tools are enough until you are shipping orders every day or selling on more than one channel. At that point, ShipStation is the usual step up for automation and multichannel order handling, Easyship fits boutiques that ship internationally, and Shippo is a simple pay-as-you-go option for stores that want carrier rate comparison without a lot of setup.
I am Carina Hatton, boutique owner since 2013 and ecommerce coach since 2019. I have printed labels one at a time from a laptop at the kitchen table, and I have worked with boutiques shipping enough volume that every saved click mattered. The right shipping software is the one that removes your actual bottleneck, not the one with the longest feature list.
What shipping software actually does
Shipping software sits between your store and the carriers. At a basic level it pulls in your orders, lets you compare carrier rates, buys postage and prints labels, then sends tracking back to the customer. Paid tools add things like automation rules, batch label printing, multichannel order syncing, branded tracking pages, return labels and international customs forms.
If you have not set up shipping at all yet, start with boutique shipping and fulfillment, which covers carriers, rate strategy, handling time and packing workflow. This article is only about choosing the software.
Shipping software compared
Pricing and plan features change, so this table compares fit rather than prices. Check each provider's current plans before you sign up.
| Tool | Best for | Strengths | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify Shipping | New and low-volume Shopify boutiques | Built into your admin, no extra app, labels from the order page | Fewer automation rules, Shopify orders only |
| ShipStation | Daily shippers and multichannel sellers | Automation rules, batch printing, many store and marketplace integrations | Monthly subscription, more setup time |
| Easyship | Boutiques shipping internationally | Cross-border rate comparison, duties and taxes estimates, customs paperwork | More than you need if you only ship domestically |
| Shippo | Stores wanting simple rate comparison | Straightforward label buying across carriers, quick setup | Automation depth depends on plan |
Shopify Shipping: when built-in is enough
If your store runs on Shopify, you already have shipping tools in your admin. You can buy discounted carrier labels, print them from the order page, and tracking goes to the customer automatically. For a boutique shipping a handful of orders a week, that covers the whole job.
Shopify Shipping is usually enough when:
- You sell only through your Shopify store and in person with Shopify POS.
- You ship a manageable number of orders and can print labels one at a time or in a small batch.
- You ship mostly within your own country.
- Your packages are fairly consistent, like folded apparel in mailers.
Before paying for anything else, set up saved package sizes and accurate product weights in Shopify. A lot of shipping frustration is really missing weights, not missing software.
ShipStation: best for daily volume and multiple channels
ShipStation is built for stores that ship often and want to stop doing the same steps by hand. It pulls orders from your store and other sales channels into one queue, so you pack and ship from one screen no matter where the order came from.
Where it earns its cost for a boutique:
- Automation rules. Set rules like "orders under a certain weight go in a poly mailer with this service" so labels are mostly pre-filled.
- Batch processing. Print a stack of labels and packing slips at once instead of order by order.
- Multichannel orders. Helpful if you sell through your site plus a marketplace or social shop.
- Branded customer experience. Options for branded tracking and shipping emails.
The trade-off is a monthly subscription and some setup time. If you ship a few orders a week, you will spend more time configuring it than it saves. If you ship every day, especially with a helper packing orders, the time saved usually adds up fast.
Easyship: best for international shipping
Easyship focuses on cross-border shipping. It compares international rates across couriers, estimates duties and taxes, and generates customs paperwork with the label. If you have customers outside your own country, or you want to start offering international shipping without guessing at costs, this is the tool built for that problem.
It matters most when:
- International orders are a real part of your sales, not an occasional surprise.
- You want customers to see shipping costs, and ideally duties, at checkout so packages are not refused at delivery.
- Customs forms are slowing you down.
If you only ship domestically, Easyship is likely more than you need.
Shippo: simple multi-carrier labels
Shippo connects your store to multiple carriers and lets you compare rates and print labels from one place, with a fast setup. It is a reasonable middle step for boutiques that want broader carrier comparison than their platform provides but do not need heavy automation yet.
Other options worth knowing
Some owners also look at Pirate Ship for simple, low-cost USPS and UPS labels, and at tools bundled into their payment or marketplace platform. These can work well. The same question applies to every option: does it fix the step that currently takes you the most time?
Which shipping software fits your stage?
| Your situation | Good fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Just launched on Shopify, a few orders a week | Shopify Shipping | No extra cost or setup |
| Shipping daily, one person packing | Shopify Shipping or Shippo, test ShipStation | Batch printing starts to save real time |
| Selling on several channels | ShipStation | One order queue for every channel |
| Regular international customers | Easyship | Duties, taxes and customs handled with the label |
| Staff or helpers packing orders | ShipStation | Rules and user access reduce mistakes |
When paid shipping software is worth it
Think of shipping software as buying back time. It usually becomes worthwhile when one or more of these is true:
- You spend a noticeable part of each day buying labels one by one.
- You regularly copy orders between channels or spreadsheets.
- Customers are asking where their order is because tracking is not going out consistently.
- You ship internationally and customs forms slow you down.
- Someone other than you packs orders and needs clear, repeatable steps.
If none of these apply, keep your money in inventory. Cash tied up in a subscription you barely use is cash you cannot spend restocking best-sellers.
Features that matter most for boutiques
- Store integration. Orders should flow in automatically from your platform.
- Carrier rate comparison. Compare services for your typical package weight and size.
- Batch labels and packing slips. The biggest time saver once volume grows.
- Tracking updates. Automatic tracking emails reduce "where is my order" messages.
- Returns. Easy return labels support a clear boutique return policy.
- Saved packages. Presets for your mailers and boxes keep rates accurate. Supply choices are covered in boutique packaging and shipping supplies.
How shipping software affects your margin
Software does not fix shipping pricing. If you offer free shipping without building it into prices or a minimum order threshold, no tool will save that margin. Decide your shipping strategy first, then choose software that carries it out efficiently. Carrier label costs, packaging and your subscription all belong in your true cost per order, alongside the product cost from your landed cost math.
