Etsy still works — but only in specific categories. The "make a planner and watch the money roll in" era is over. Here's what actually sells in 2026, what's hyper-saturated, and the categories almost no one is targeting.
I'm Carina — ecommerce coach since 2019. I've helped students build on Etsy and also helped many migrate OFF Etsy to Shopify once they outgrew it. Here's the honest landscape.

Why category choice on Etsy matters so much
Etsy's algorithm rewards niche specificity. A "planner" listing is fighting a million others. A "Hebrew-language Shabbat planner for working moms" is fighting 12. The riches are in the niches — more so on Etsy than anywhere else.
Categories still profitable in 2026
1. Wedding & event stationery (especially digital)
Custom invites, signs, seating charts, place cards. High emotional value, $15–$50 average price, repeat customers (every wedding is new). Best subniche: cultural/religious-specific weddings.
2. Personalized jewelry
Name necklaces, birthstone rings, custom engraved bands. Print-on-demand jewelry platforms (like Shineon) make this dropship-able. Gift-driven, AOV $30–$80.
3. Hyper-niche printables
NOT "weekly planner." Yes "ADHD task tracker for moms with toddlers," "homeschool curriculum tracker for Charlotte Mason method," "trauma therapist intake worksheets." The niche IS the moat.
4. Digital wedding & party templates
Canva-editable templates the buyer customizes themselves. Same buyer as #1 but cheaper price point ($8–$20), higher volume.
5. Religious & faith-based products
Strong loyalty, underserved by mainstream marketplaces. Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Catholic — all categories with active buyers.
6. Pet portraits (custom illustrated)
Emotional, gift-driven, AOV $25–$60. Best if you can illustrate (or hire one illustrator).
7. Notion & digital templates
Etsy has become a real Notion template marketplace. Business OS templates, life planners, finance dashboards. $15–$60 price points.
8. Handmade body care + candles (with strong branding)
Saturated, but a clear brand voice and aesthetic still wins. AOV $20–$45.
9. Cultural / heritage products
Latina, Black, Asian, Jewish, Indigenous heritage-celebrating items. Massive underserved demand, loyal buyers.
10. Embroidered & monogrammed gifts
Tote bags, towels, baby blankets, hats. Personalization commands a premium.
Categories I would NOT enter on Etsy in 2026
- Generic planners and habit trackers — millions of listings, $1.99 prices, race to the bottom.
- Generic wall art prints — competing with Walmart and Etsy's algorithm favors high-volume sellers.
- Mainstream apparel (t-shirts with generic phrases) — Amazon and Redbubble own this.
- Stickers (without a clear niche) — oversaturated since 2020.
- "Trendy product of the week" arbitrage — gets you suspended.
Etsy vs your own store
Etsy gives you traffic. Your own store gives you ownership. The smart play: start on Etsy for built-in discovery, then drive Etsy buyers to your email list and eventually a Shopify store for higher-margin sales. Don't pick one or the other — sequence them.
See Shopify vs other platforms for when to move.
How to actually drive sales on Etsy
- Pinterest is the #1 external traffic driver for Etsy. Every product gets pinned. See how to make money on Pinterest.
- Etsy SEO is real: long-tail titles, all 13 tags filled, attribute fields completed.
- Etsy Ads: set a small daily budget ($1–$5) only after you have 10+ listings and 5+ reviews.
