Step 1: Pick your business model

Before the website, before the photos, decide how you'll source. Your model determines your margins, your daily work, and how much money you need to start.

  • Reselling your own closet / thrifted finds. Lowest cost, slowest scale. Good for $200–$2,000/month side income on Poshmark, eBay, Depop.

Step 2: Pick the right platform

  • Etsy. Great for handmade or design-led pieces. Built-in traffic, but you're renting the customer.
  • Poshmark / Depop / Mercari. Perfect for resale and thrift. Bad for building a brand.
  • Instagram / TikTok Shop. Use as a sales channel on top of Shopify — not instead of.

If you want a real business with a brand: Shopify. Everything else funnels back into it.

Step 3: Pick a niche (and stop trying to sell to "everyone")

The #1 reason new online boutiques don't sell: they sell to no one in particular. "Cute trendy clothes for women" is invisible. "Western-modern modest tops for women 30–45 in Texas" is a brand.

Step 4: Source inventory you'll actually be proud to ship

Cheap inventory shows up cheap in the photos and the returns rate. Your sourcing options:

Step 5: Write listings that convert

Your product page is the salesperson. Make it work:

  • 4–6 photos minimum. Front, back, detail, on-body, lifestyle.
  • Model fit info. Height, size, what she's wearing. Real numbers.
  • Fabric + care + measurements — this slashes returns.
  • Short, sensory description. "Buttery soft jersey, runs slightly oversized." Not "high quality fabric."
  • One clear "why this piece" line. "The shirt you'll grab for school pickup all week."

Step 6: Price for actual profit
